![]() ![]() ![]() Those flaws in Macgo Blu-ray Player have since been corrected in the Pro version, and so far, it works well with my first Blu-ray and with the handful I’ve purchased since. I immediately bought a license for MakeMKV, and I consider it money well spent. That proved successful, and the rip played flawlessly with VLC, demonstrating that the disc was fine and the limitation was in the player program. In an attempt to determine whether the failure was due to the player program or to the disc itself, I fired up MakeMKV to see whether I could rip the movie to my hard drive. (For details, see my review of Macgo Blu-ray Player Pro.) ![]() So I bought my first Blu-ray movie and tried it out, only to discover a couple of significant flaws, one of them a deal breaker. I bought and registered Macgo Blu-ray Player early last year when my initial testing demonstrated that with a Blu-ray capable external optical drive I could play Blu-rays on my Mac mini. Well, I’ve finally discovered a use for MakeMKV: keeping me from wasting purchased Blu-rays in the event that my Blu-ray player application acts up. MakeMKV fell into that “potentially useful” category, too, so it’s also had a place on my Mac, although the instances in which I’ve played with it have been almost vanishingly rare. I'm beginning to think that I have no choice but to go all digital because there just isn't a viable Blu-Ray option.įor quite a while now, I’ve kept Mac DVDRipper Pro and HandBrake on my Mac, not because I’ve had frequent need for them but because I’ve occasionally had use for them. I want my movies in digital format, but I feel safer having a physical format to pull from if something ever goes wrong. Most are fake, or simply fail completely. I would love to find a Blu-Ray ripper that actually works so I can watch my BD collection on the Apple TV, but I've searched the web high and low and it simply doesn't exist on the Mac. This is clearly a key part of the Blu-Ray encryption process, and MakeMKV cannot handle it. Only one is correct, and MakeMKV doesn't know which one, so it wants to do them all. The scenes are all out of order for 299 of them. Most of the time there's like 300 versions of the film that it wants to import. However, the deal-breaker is that it only works with about 15-25% of discs I've tried. It's not the most intuitive process and I wish you could pick other outputs, but it's all we've got. I get a nice gigantic mkv file that I can convert to a better (smaller) format. All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.Fast conversion - converts as fast as your drive can read data.Preserves all meta-information (track language, audio type).Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio.Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+.There are many players that can play MKV files nearly on all platforms, and there are tools to convert MKV files to many formats, including DVD and Blu-ray discs.Īdditionally MakeMKV can instantly stream decrypted video without intermediate conversion to a wide range of players, so you may watch Blu-ray and DVD discs with your favorite player on your favorite OS or on your favorite device. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters. It converts the video clips from the proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. ![]() MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into a free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. ![]() ![]() ![]() Google Drive and iCloud Drive also only backup files and not an entire hard drive. In fairness, this is common for this consumer-facing type of cloud storage service. So, it’s not a full cloud backup service. External drives and NAS drives aren't supported. This means that you'll need to reinstall operating systems, settings and applications should the worst happen in a catastrophic drive failure, as OneDrive only takes care of your files. What it doesn't do is provide unlimited, bare metal backup of devices. Much like iCloud Drive is closely intertwined with the macOS experience, OneDrive offers seamless performance for those running Microsoft’s operating system. It should come as no surprise that OneDrive works best on Windows. Any files you place there will automatically be synced to the cloud. On initial setup OneDrive will create a dedicated folder in your home directory, though you can change the location of this if you wish. ![]() You specify the files and folders you want to be backed up, and they get automatically synced with copies in the cloud, along with the other computers and devices that you've got OneDrive set up on. Microsoft OneDrive works similarly to other well-known consumer cloud storage options, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and Apple iCloud Drive. We like the handy document scanning feature in the app, and while it will never match the quality of a dedicated scanner, it does its job very well. Part of this may involve eliminating the home printer, which has long served as a scanner, too. Although OneDrive has plenty of competition in this area, not least from Google Photos and a host of the best Google Photos alternatives, it’s one of the best photo cloud storage apps out there.īy the very nature of a cloud drive, users will be minimizing their use of physical devices in favor of an access-anywhere nature. We found the apps particularly strong at syncing and displaying photos and videos that have been snapped on the smartphone. There’s a decent level of control within them for passcode protection and mobile data use, though some other cloud drive apps offer more thorough management. Users are enabled to jump around folders and files with a few swipes and taps. The apps for Android and iOS are elegant and intuitive to use. Perhaps on the mobile front is where OneDrive does its best work. That said, the desktop client does offer extra control for things like throttling bandwidth and saving files to your computer or storing them in the cloud only, both of which help you to free up space or speed on your computer. Unfortunately, it tends to get a little bit in the way of Apple iCloud Drive though. The syncing client for macOS isn't anything that notable, but like the web interface, it covers everything you're going to need without getting too confusing, running from the menu bar, and can optionally start up with macOS. But it does get the job done of displaying your media, sharing your files, and letting you move files around, but it hardly has any panache. It doesn't have the stylish simplicity Google Drive or Dropbox. It's seriously slick and easy to use.Īlternatively, the web interface, which can be accessed from any computer using your Microsoft ID, lacks a level of sophistication. When running Windows, OneDrive shows up in the navigation pane, right alongside Documents, Desktop, and everything else, to quickly right-click on files and folders to move them to the cloud or make sure you've got local copies available. ![]() (Image credit: Microsoft) OneDrive: Interface & experience ![]() ![]() ![]() Time difference between Greenwich Mean Time and San. Given that large constrictors like this have been living with humans for thousands of years, it means the largest of these snakes probably could have it out for us. Now consider the fact that at 23’ these snakes can be man eaters and that they can get upwards of 30+ feet long. It’s a bit like putting a giant tourniquet on your whole body. If these snakes cut off blood supply quickly, the prey die much faster. When you crunch the numbers, the limiting factor is the flow of blood to the brain, not how long you can survive without breathing. By placing pressure sensors inside its next meal (a large pig), we could see that the suffocation myth was busted. We were able to test a massive Sulawesi reticulated python in a lab setting. In the show, I worked with physiologists who studied the power of these snakes. I hosted an Animal Planet show where I investigated the python that swallowed a young man named Akbar on the island of Sulawesi. Reticulated Pythons can eat an adult humanĮveryone always thinks constrictors like the reticulated python kill through suffocation. Oddly, it also lists the largest one ever caught in Celebes, Indonesia in 1902 at 32.75 feet – even though many scientists are skeptical of this historical report and think the longest ever may be a bit smaller. The Guinness book of world records lists the largest officially measured living snake as Medusa – 25 ft 2 in. ![]() ![]() However, no snake has been officially measured that long, and large specimens of these species are becoming increasingly rare due to urbanisation and illegal poaching for the pet trade. ![]() Biologists tend to agree that this snake could reach lengths of around 30 feet. ![]() ![]() The slope of the PPF between B and C is (approximately) the vertical distance (the rise) over the horizontal distance (the run). The foregone healthcare is given by the vertical distance between B and C. The additional education is measured by the horizontal distance between B and C. Whether or not we have specific numbers, conceptually we can measure the opportunity cost of additional education as society moves from point B to point C on the PPF. When you think of improvements in healthcare, you can think of longer life expectancies, lower levels of infant mortality, and fewer outbreaks of disease. However, when you think of improvements in education, you can think of accomplishments like more years of school completed, fewer high-school dropouts, and higher scores on standardized tests. An additional reason for the lack of numbers is that there is no single way to measure levels of education and healthcare. If this were a real world example, that data would be available. There are no specific numbers because we do not know the exact amount of resources this imaginary economy has, nor do we know how many resources it takes to produce healthcare and how many resources it takes to produce education. The second is the absence of specific numbers on the axes of the PPF. In contrast, the PPF has a curved shape because of the law of the diminishing returns. ![]() This is because its slope is given by the relative prices of the two goods. The first is the fact that the budget constraint is a straight line. There are two major differences between a budget constraint and a production possibilities frontier. What’s the difference between a budget constraint and a PPF? By now you might be saying, “Hey, this PPF is sounding like the budget constraint.” If so, read the following Clear It Up feature. Just as with Alphonso’s budget constraint, the opportunity cost is shown by the slope of the production possibilities frontier. What would the opportunity cost be for the additional education? The opportunity cost would be the healthcare society has to give up. Suppose it considers moving from point B to point C. Because the PPF is downward sloping from left to right, the only way society can obtain more education is by giving up some healthcare. Suppose society has chosen to operate at point B, and it is considering producing more education. ![]() Most important, the production possibilities frontier clearly shows the tradeoff between healthcare and education. But it does not have enough resources to produce outside the PPF. Society can choose any combination of the two goods on or inside the PPF. In effect, the production possibilities frontier plays the same role for society as the budget constraint plays for Alphonso. Alternatively, the society could choose to produce any combination of healthcare and education shown on the production possibilities frontier. If it were to allocate all of its resources to education, it could produce at point F. But it would not have any resources to produce education. If the society were to allocate all of its resources to healthcare, it could produce at point A. In Figure 2.3, healthcare is shown on the vertical axis and education is shown on the horizontal axis. At D, most resources go to education, and at F, all go to education. At A, all resources go to healthcare and at B, most go to healthcare. Education Production Possibilities Frontier This production possibilities frontier shows a tradeoff between devoting social resources to healthcare and devoting them to education. This situation is illustrated by the production possibilities frontier in Figure 2.3.įigure 2.3 A Healthcare vs. Suppose a society desires two products, healthcare and education. As you read this section, focus on the similarities.īecause society has limited resources (e.g., labor, land, capital, raw materials) at any point in time, there is a limit to the quantities of goods and services it can produce. There are more similarities than differences between individual choice and social choice. This section of the chapter will explain the constraints faced by society, using a model called the production possibilities frontier (PPF). Just as individuals cannot have everything they want and must instead make choices, society as a whole cannot have everything it might want, either.
